  • Calliandra haemotocepha, or Dwarf Powder Puff Plant, is a relatively fast-growing, flowering, semi-tropical shrub. It is one of several dozen cultivars of this unique and interesting species. The name Dwarf variety is relative, as it grows into a full, bushy shrub about 4 to 5 feet tall if unpruned, which is much smaller than many other types of the species.
  • The prolific, long-lasting, scarlet red puff ball-shaped flowers begin as small, clustered buds that resemble small berries and are very attractive to butterflies and hummingbirds. The Dwarf Powder Puff Plant grows bushy and upright with multiple, thin branches densely covered with unusual, medium-sized oval, pinnate leaves that fold together like praying hands at night.
  • Care: Plant in fertile well-draining soil. Provide supplemental irrigation until well established and during dry periods. Prune for shape after flowering and to remove seeds. Feed a good quality slow release bloom-booster in Spring.
  • Indoor Growing: Dwarf Powder Puff Plants require the full spectrum of bright, indirect light for 4 to 6 hours daily. Warm temperatures above 75 degrees, with at least a 10*F day/night differential, high humidity to produce flowers. The vine can be grown indoors fairly easily, but producing flowers can be challenging.
  • Climate: Dwarf Powder Puff plant is a tropical plant recommended for growing in Zones 9, 10, and 11. Protection from cold temperatures is required in all Zones for the longest life, best appearance, and earliest flowering. Note that Zone recommendations are based on average temperatures and does not consider other variables.
